It’s hard to believe that August has just begun. July was a fairly damp month but that didn’t stop various activities. The first, and it is an important event here in Peru, was Day of the Teacher. There was plenty of enthusiasm and talent with songs, poems and dances interspersed with quotations about the importance of teachers and the regard felt for them. The 5th year were the brains behind the celebration. Afterwards all the personnel of the school went to a local restaurant for a celebratory lunch which, as is normal here, ended up with dancing. We are in the period of obligatory earthquake drills. So far we have had two and there is a third one to come very shortly. It’s interesting that when the alarm goes without warning everything is done quickly and slickly. When the time is known, as for example these drills, it appears more leisurely, if the whole school assembling in given places in under a minute and a half can be called leisurely.

The second round of the presidential elections took place on 5th June. Unlike at the first round the weather was very pleasant and yet there didn’t seem to be a lot of activity. Other years there were long queues outside the polling stations with armed soldiers patrolling. All the early voting showed a very close race with votes from abroad possibly the deciding factor.

I am writing this on a lovely sunny Saturday morning with the only sound being the bouncing of basketballs as some of our younger pupils hone their skills. I’m writing a bit later than usual but I thought I would wait until we had the celebrations for Mother’s Day.
