Soaking beans before cooking

In Delia's recipe Old-Fashioned Shin of Beef Stew with Butter Beans and Crusted Onion Dumplings it says to pre soak butter beans how long should they soak for?

Hello,

Place the beans in a bowl or saucepan and cover them with plenty of cold water and leave them to soak overnight.

If that is not possible you can place the beans in a pan, cover with plenty of cold water, bring them up to the boil, boil for 10 minutes and leave them to soak for 2 hours.
