Did you always like to cook or is it something you developed a liking for once you began working with Michael?
I really enjoyed food and cooking from a very young age. My parents lived in Malaysia and Indonesia for 5 or 6 years and they were really interested in and enjoyed exotic food. I can remember them talking about it from when I was about 5 years old it was something we just celebrated.
In your new book The Fast 800 Favourites, you recommend taking a good-quality multivitamin. How do we know what to buy when there is so much choice on offer in chemists and health food shops?
There is debate about how much benefit people actually get from them, but one of the biggest vitamins that we're missing is Vitamin D. We're advised to take it over the winter, and there’s a benefit from taking it during the summer because people are wearing sun cream. It has so many benefits throughout the whole body.
How would you encourage anyone who regards green vegetables as boring to embrace them?
In the new book there are plenty of ideas how to make them tastier, from adding a dash of soy sauce, to a sprinkling of nigella seeds. If that is a step too far, there’s also some lovely low-calorie choices.
Going on a diet can mean time and money. Is The Fast 800 Favourites expensive and time consuming to follow?
No to both! We did calculate a random sample of recipes, and they turned out not only to be affordable, but also likely to be cheaper. We also included a brand new 7-day meal plan to follow plus tips to customise the plan to fit your own lifestyle.
Some people find it difficult to stick to a weight loss regime, particularly if they are following it on their own. Is there anything that can help them?
Definitely yes. We have the Fast 800 online programme. It’s a step-by-step members-only support programme that helps you lose weight and keep it off. When you sign up you take an assessment, then a programme is set to suit your goals and circumstances. There are health coaches and your progress gets tracked to help you to incorporate The Fast 800 into your daily routine and sustain your weight loss. There is also a program and community to provide support for those on weight loss medication.
Michael’s weakness was chocolate! What’s yours….?
It’s very much a genetic thing for people to crave food and have higher appetites. Michael used to joke that he was a Labrador, who wants to eat everything and I’m a greyhound, I just don't crave the same way. Michael used to ask me to hide the chocolate, and I still find blocks of it in drawers and cupboards. Bizarrely I was sitting at my desk a few months ago and stood up to reach for a book, and one of his chocolate bars fell out and landed on my desk!
What food reminds you of your childhood?
What I remember most is that my mother had an enormous wok, and from a young age, we all were expected to chop the celery, carrots etc, to help with the preparation. She'd make a fantastic, nasi goreng with some prawns all around the edge, it was very exotic! We'd all sit around at the table with this lovely large pan in the middle, I remember that from very young age.
Do you have a current favourite restaurant or type of restaurant?
We have a fantastic local Chinese restaurant that does the best soft-shell crab. We’ve tried it in many other restaurants, but they just don’t live up to it.
What food or ingredients could you not do without?
Soy sauce, and I think the children drown almost everything in it. I do wonder about the amount of salt they are taking in!
Is there a memorable meal you remember eating?
When we were travelling in Australia, we had a meal in a restaurant in Sydney where they were feeding us bugs! They looked like large maggots and were the main protein - they were delicious. So that was certainly a memorable one.
Is there something in particular you always keep in the fridge?
Yes. Red sauerkraut which I make myself. It’s really easy just diced onions, diced fennel, cabbage, a small piece of beetroot and some salt. Then within five days, we have a lovely, bright red sauerkraut.
What would be your last supper if anything was available to you and where would you eat it?
Down in Swanage, Dorset. Sitting by the beach eating cockles and mussels with a nice cold lager.
