Every December, when the Christmas rush begins, there’s one name that takes over kitchens all over the world: Delia. It’s almost a Christmas tradition in itself!
So this year, we thought we'd take a look at the most popular Delia recipes you've been looking at over the past few Christmases. There was no surprise with the the classics, A Traditional Christmas Pudding, Classic Christmas Cake, Traditional Mince Pies, Home-made Christmas Mincemeat, and the main event, Traditional Roast Turkey with Pork, Sage and Onion Stuffing. All the annual festive favourites were there, just like Christmas decorations being dragged out of the loft each December.
But tucked among the predictable favourites there were a few surprises. Basic Pancakes, of all things, nudged its way onto the list, then came Old-fashioned Rice Pudding and unexpectedly, Leek, Onion and Potato Soup emerged, proving that simple, soothing recipes really do have their moment when the frost bites and you can't face anymore Christmas shopping.
Of course, the list didn’t stop there. Classics such as Boeuf Bourguignon, Gratin Dauphinois, How to Roast Beef, and How to Roast Glazed Ham are a reminder that festive tables are about more than one big feast. Sparkling sides included Parmesan-baked Parsnips, Traditional Braised Red Cabbage with Apples, Traditional Bread Sauce, and the always-reliable Yorkshire Pudding for 6.
Searches at this time of year also surge for Royal Icing, Almond Icing (Marzipan), Meringues, Traditional English Trifle, and The Best Ever Apple Crumble.
What struck us most was the blend of tradition and comfort. Delia is there for the big showstoppers, as well as the smaller meals that make December feel cosy. So now we can picture you with soup simmering on the hob, crumble bubbling in the oven and pancake batter at the ready.
In the end, these Delia recipes tell a lovely story. Christmas cooking isn’t only about grandeur it’s about familiarity, comfort, and the dishes that bring everyone together, whether it’s a Traditional Roast Turkey or a humble bowl of soup - and isn’t that very much in the spirit of Delia?
